What Should I do if I think I hit Something and Left the Scene?

Posted by Peter Tilem || 15-Jun-2015

Often clients will call me and ask me about a situation in which they believe they were driving and hit something and left the scene, and don’t know what to do. The truth of the matter is, leaving the scene of an accident in New York State can be a serious crime. If someone is injured or if property is damaged, there could be a crime that’s committed and the police may be looking for you. It’s important in those circumstances to have a lawyer who can contact the police to make a determination, without giving up your name and identity, about whether or not the police have information that they’re looking for you or wish to charge you with a crime.

These cases can be pretty complex, so it’s important for a lawyer to call up and get information without giving information. If a person is seriously injured in New York and the person left the scene of the accident, it can be a felony. A felony is a serious crime in New York where a person faces more than one year in prison as a result of the crime. It’s important, with any type of charge of this kind, that you speak with a lawyer who is experienced in dealing with these specific types of cases.
